State officers executed a search warrant on the home in Lagrangeville after receiving information that the resident was harboring illegal wildlife, DEC officials said.
Once inside the home, the officers, joined by the officers DEC Marine Resources personnel and staff from Wildlife Conservation Society’s (WCS) New York Aquarium and the Long Island Aquarium, found a 15-foot-diameter above-ground basement pool with seven live sandbar sharks, two dead leopard sharks, and one dead hammerhead shark.
The sharks were caught with ease, officials said, and wildlife specialist took blood, measured length, tagged them, and transferred them to a box truck, which is outfitted with plastic tanks, oxygen, and climate control.
A WCS veterinarian assessed the animals’ condition before the sharks were escorted to the Long Island Aquarium for holding until the case is closed, DEC officials said.
The incident is currently under investigation.
